Relative Practice - COIN 63 Lab 1

This file is called "Relative". It is stored in the directory (folder) called "relative_practice".
The purpose of this exercise is to practise writing relative links to files on different levels of the same web server.
Relative links "are relative to the current location (the html document which contains the link) within the site."
Reference: COIN 63 - a file located 5 levels up, across, and 5 levels down.

Martha's COIN 63 Home Page - up two levels

Foohill's CTIS Web Server - a root level link (up 5 levels)

Sandi Watkins' COIN 63 Schedule - up 5 levels, across, and down 4 levels

Lab 1 Test - in another folder, down one level

Instructions:

Source: Sandi Watkins' COIN 63 Lab 1

   1. Create a new directory in your web space called relative_practice.
   2. Create a new XHTML page (use the template on the Resources page) called
relative.html. The title tag should be "Relative". Put some text on it that
will let you know that it is called Relative and that it is in relative_practice
directory. Put the file into the relative_practice directory and be sure
there is a link back to the previous page.
   3. On your home page, add a new link to this lab assignment.
   4. Add a link from relative.html back to your home page.
Use the server diagram to figure out how to do it.
Remember, use ../ to go up one directory level.
   5. Add another link from relative.html which will go to the root level of the
CTIS server ( home ). The default file name is index.html. To do this you will
need to go out of the relative_practice directory, out of your own account and
out of the coin063.0X directory. Remember, each time you move up and out of a
directory, use the ../ Use the server diagram to figure out how to do it.
   6. Add a link that goes from relative.html to the COIN 63 Schedule Page. You
already have the path from relative.html to the root level of the server, so
look at the server diagram and figure out where you need to go from
krypton.fhda.edu to find the COIN 63 Schedule page.
   7. When you are successful with this, add another directory inside of
      relative_practice called test.
   8. Create a test file and put it inside. Practice writing links to all these
test pages to make sure you completely understand how to move from directory
to directory. This skill is essential for a web developer.
Also, think about navigation - don't leave a user stranded on a page without
navigation back to where they were. They shouldn't have to use the browser
      BACK button.
   9. Add an absolute link which goes to the search engine Google. The url is
      http://www.google.com.
  10. Make sure that every page has links back to where the user came from.
Never leave a user "hanging", or dependant on the browser BACK button.
  11. Test ALL the links (incuding the image map links) on your home page and
correct any that are not correct. Whenever possible, a link should be
      relative rather than absolute.
  12. You will be submitting this (and all) work to your CTIS web site. It is
also necessary for you to submit your work via Etudes NG to receive a grade.
      Follow the submission instructions below.
