For this course, all of your assignments will be uploaded to an account on the CTIS web server which has been provided for you.
A common question is "Can I use my own web space instead?" Well the answer is... no you cannot. I teach a lot of classes with a lot of students, and keeping track of your individual URLs is not at all efficient for me. Having all of your accounts/assignments in a known location is the goal (and requirement) for this course... sorry!
This document outlines the process for obtaining your account information, the procedure for uploading your assignments, and some general information/tips about interacting with our web server.
Most of you have probably gone through this procedure in prior classes so this may be a review of the required steps which must be completed each quarter. If you are a newcomer to our class(es), use this information to setup your account. If you have questions, please ask these in the forum so we can help assist you.
Please read through this page before you begin and then follow the directions carefully. Have your browser window open as you work through the steps to activate your account and upload your files so you can easily consult the instructions. You may also wish to print this page for easier reference.
Obtaining your Account ID and Password
We have a secure web server which will provide you with your account information for this course. Click this link to https://orion.fhda.edu to obtain your CTIS Web site account information.
Enter your last name and your alternative student ID in the form presented to you. Note that this is NOT your social security number, it is your alternate student ID which was provided to you as you registered.
A window will open displaying your username and password for each class you are signed up for this quarter. Once you have this information, close the window and return to this page and follow the instructions to set up your sites and FTP your files.
NOTE - If the system does not provide your login/password information, realize that accounts are only generated every 2-3 days. If you are a late-add your account has probably not yet been generated. Try again tomorrow - please be patient!
Important Note:
Realize that the information for uploading to your CTIS web server space is a completely different username/password than that of the ETUDES classroom and for accessing the COIN 65 support web site. Each of these sites require different usernames/passwords and you will need to track/bookmark each of these different sites. This is the username/password which will be required when you connect to the our server to FTP/upload your assignments. This is the only time this information will be required! Because your will be doing this on a weekly basis, bookmark this information and write it down! |
Uploading your Assignments to the CTIS Web Server
The CTIS web server requires that you use SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol) instead of the traditional and standard FTP protocol. This means that you will need to use a software program which has the capability of uploading file(s) in the secure (SFTP) mode.
The CTIS website has documentation for all aspects of obtaining/accessing/uploading files to the CTIS web server. Click this link to a CTIS page which details the SFTP programs you can use when uploading your assignment files to your web server space. This page lists software programs which are either free or low-cost.
Uploading Your Files
The CTIS documentation lists the different servers (machines) which you can use to connect to and upload your assignments. The server addresses which you can use to connect to, and UPLOAD your files this quarter are:
- losaltos.fhda.edu
- london.fhda.edu
- paris.fhda.edu
- kyoto.fhda.edu
If you are UPLOADING files to your server space, these are the ONLY machines/addresses you can use this quarter to upload your files!
Ensure that your SFTP program is using one of these addresses and it is set to SFTP and _NOT_ the standard FTP setting!
Important Note:
The UNIX host machines which are available this term for FTP are:

Testing Your Account in a Web Browser
The username and password you obtained above are ONLY used with your SFTP program to upload your files. The process of viewing your published files in a browser uses a completely different address.
In a web browser, the ONLY address which will display your files is:
http://krypton.fhda.edu/ (opens in a new window/tab).
To view YOUR account you should use this:
http://krypton.fhda.edu/~accountname/
The tilde character ~ is located in the upper left corner of the keyboard to the left of number one. You'll need to use the shift key. This character, which precedes your account name, tells the web server to look up your account and load in the default page (if there is one). If not - which is probably the case now, you'll see a page which displays your parent directory like the one below.
Your listing will of course be different and display your account name. If you have uploaded your first assignment, your listing will include your home.html file, and possibly any other files/folders you have uploaded.
Important Note:
Your individual web accounts are protected with the same username/password as the COIN 65 support site... you will be asked for this information when you view your CTIS web account/files in a web browser! |
