Monkey with Abacus Faster Than Supercomputer

In a fascinating story from the animal kingdom, a monkey named Alphonse was able to compute mathematical equations faster than IBM's Deep Blue supercomputer. Deep Blue, whose crushing computational abilities toppled chess master Gary Kasparov, was widely regarded as one of the greatest computers every built. But Alphonse, and his ivory and teak abacus, have apparently showed the electronic world that mammals still have something to prove. Operating at an amazing speed -- the comptuer equivalent of 15.7 teraflops of processing power -- Alphonse was able to compute Pi to a trillionth digit.

The IBM engineers were shocked, dumbfounded and scared, scurrying wildly around their machine, hoping to discover some malfunction. No flaws were apparent. However, based on a challenge by Big Blue, Alphonse was unable to beat the supercomputer at chess. The game was called a draw, after Alphonse ate his king, threw a pawn at the audience, and jammed a bishop into Big Blue's fiber optic input.
