A. Under Louis XIV, royal absolutism reached its height in France and perhaps in Europe. Despite the often despotic qualities of their rule, many Europeans supported absolutist rule

First, give me your OWN BUT TIGHT definition of absolutism.
· Second, what was it all about? Why did absolutism receive the support of so many Europeans and rulers and thinkers
· You are an Apologist for royal absolutism. Be that person briefly. Make a case to a group of students for absolutism, and use the example of France as supporting material.

B. By the second half of the seventeenth century, England and France were the leading nations of two constrasting systems of government, economics, political institutions. For the 18th century, much of Europe's history centered on this rivalry.

· What were the differences?
· What events in each country "solidified" the results?
· Why in the end did the English model eventually win out?
