An experiment in sound production:
When I closed my ears, I didn't really notice anything different - it just sounded "funny". I had to actually do the process several times, and then just concentrate on a few words. What I finally noticed was that I could feel my ear drums (or something) moving as I spoke the words out loud! My voice sounded muffled, lower, louder, like it was rattling around in a big cavern. Now that I have a cold, I recognize that the muffled sound I heard was much like I sound now. Humm... Music for extended listening: I love jazz; I love Latin; I love rock/pop/blues/folk/world. But if all I could hear was one kind of music for five years, I think I'd choose classical. It's what my parents played on the phonograph; for that reason it would be most "soothing" if it's the only thing I heard. Also, there's plenty of variety. But without the lyrics, I could experience music as a bodily/aural event, which is it's original function, I imagine. And if it's the only music I could hear, I'd want it to be effective! A few observances on sound: At the perfomance of "Beautiful" last night, our friend found the music painful to his ears. With tinnitus and diminishing hearing, what I enjoyed as "music" was experienced by him as torture! Noise/music/sound can be very intrusive; I suspect as the world becomes more crowded and the populations more elderly, we'll focus more on noise pollution... At the assisted living facility my parents moved into, the biggest problem I noticed was how disadvantaged are those with poor hearing. They could not converse; they could not meet anyone new; they became isolated, and they withdrew. That was tragic! Then I found out that Medicare does not even pay for hearing aids. That, in MHO, is unfathomable. |

You make some interesting observations. Not everyone experiences sound the same. Some are more gifted at playing music and making sound. Others find sound very overwhelming when there is cacophony. Still, others don't hear much at all. At the center of our communication is sound..hearing and listening and speaking. |
