Welcome to the world of sound! For this part of Digital Media Skills, you will take a magical mystery tour of audio.
Let's start with a simple exercise:
Read this sentence out loud and listen to the sound of your voice. (Yes, that first sentence you just read but aloud). Now, read it again but put your fingers in both ears as you read it aloud. What happens to the sound of your voice? Explain the differences you hear in The Sound Forum_Part One. I'd like to hear from you how you describe it. Be creative! There is one more thing for that Forum which is found in #3 below...post both in the same Forum response.
Assignments for this week:
1. In the Reader: read pages 99 - 111 (Audio Overview starts at the bottom of page 99 and on page 111, stop at “MIDI and Sequencing” in the digital reader) and 86 - 95 in the paperback.
2. Study for the MIDTERM. Yes, it’s that time.
3. Post to the forum a short paragraph about which music genre you would choose if it was the only music that you could listen to for the next five years. Your genre choice can be very general as in Rock, Pop, Hip/Hop, Classical, Jazz, R&B, etc., or you can choose more specific genres like Downtempo Electronica, Latin Jazz, Death Metal, Crunkcore, G-Funk, etc. There are hundreds of specific music genres, as you know. Choose only one and tell the group in a well-thought out paragraph why you would choose this genre for the next 5 years. (Value: 5 extra points for 5 or more sentences, 1 extra point for anything less.)
4. Read the AUDIO PROJECT ASSIGNMENT SHEET. Work on Part One of the audio project assignment, which is to write alistof all of the sounds one would hear if they were in the environment that you show in the various frames of your graphics project OR from one of the following 3 choices:
1. A playground during recess at an elementary school,
2. A busy Summer day on a heavily populated beach in Southern
California,
3. An adventurous hike in a jungle in South America
4. Some really cool NEW idea that you come up with on your own that you think would make a good soundscape.
Email this list directly to me at and name the file as your name and last initial in the subject line along with Audio Project List (like this: ArthurP Audio Project List). Don't forget to post a description in the forum of the difference in what you hear when you speak out loud with your fingers in your ears.
