The FLOOD on Fulham Street - a Roof Repair Gone WRONG!
On Tuesday, August 16, 2011 I was "home alone" on Fulham Street when I heard the "whoosh" of water. It was pouring outside, but this sounded ominousely different. I quickly discovered that a FLOOD of water was pouring down inside the house, between the study and bedroom. Going downstairs, I discovered the ceiling tiles in the hallway were soaked, and water was pouring into the garage, endangering all the storage carefully placed up on sawhorses. It was obvious that the roof replacement job begun that morning had gone terribly awry. A call to neighbors brought quick assistance as Cindy and Donna helped me cope. We placed buckets and towel and plastic everywhere, and moved the boxes to safe areas. The roofers also responded quickly, and drained and swept the roof and put new tarps down. A phone call to Country Financial Insurance at 11pm brought promises of quick insurance restitution, and an appointment was set for the next morning. As I downloaded the photos around 3am, I noticed the camera time was 12 hours off. So, I documented that, and finally went to bed. See a single-page PDF or a slideshow with 25 photos and descriptions.
Early the next morning I found the offending hole in the roof created by workers the day. The roof was being replaced the roof in preparation for selling the house. But now, what a mess! CFI was quick and helpful, and ServPro was efficient and professional in drying the study and garage. However, arranging the repairs was another nightmare. A list of approved contractors had been provided, and the one chosen seemed very accommodating. However, the more we worked with him, it became apparent he was too domineering and rigid, and simply refused to listen to what we needed. Once we got the assessment of damages correctly documented, therefor, we chose to have the work done by familiar, trustworthy people - Mike McCloskey and Sons, who had painted the entire ceiling and inside walls the year. The realtor of our house recommended her brother Mark Toveri for repair of the floors (Finnish Projects), and he and his partner did a fabulous job.SO - the end result provided an actual improvement of the house interior as well as exterior, but On MY - what a workout!
