On Saturday, June21st we began Part 1 of Drive 2014, heading from San Francico CA to Houston TX.
- Saturday June 21, we drove (blog post) from San Francisco over the Pacheco Pass and down I-5 and I-40 to Kingman AZ. Along the way we crossed the edge of the Mohave and Colorado Deserts (blog post).
- Sunday June 22, we drove I-40 and occassionally Route 66 (blog post) to Santa Fe NM to visit for two days. We ended up staying 3 - and bought a new car! (blog post).
- Monday June 23, we went to Museum Hill in Santa Fe to see the International Folk Museum and the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture.
- Tuesday June 24, we took the Maxima to Garcia Nissan Santa Fe. The cause of the surging and stalling was not located. However, while waiting for the car to be repaired, we decided to look at the new Nissans, and ended up buying a Rogue (Lo and Behold). We had considered buying a new car for 2-3 years, and now seemed as good a time as any).
- Wednesday June 25, we drove to Wichita Falls TX, .and gave our new car it's first long-distance drive. We had much to learn, about packing a hatchback, updating the fuel mileage, and even about how to start a "smart car". Blog- Going Rogue.
- Thursday June 26, we visited the Kemp Sculpture Garden and the Kemp Center for the Arts in the Kemp Public Library in Wichita Falls before we drove to Sulphur Springs TX to visit Martha's cousin Carolyn and husband Tom. First however we stopped at the Pecan Shed in Henrietta TX and bought Carolyn a pecan pie, and then in Decatur TX to see Martha's friend Ann and husband Pat. We met for lunch at Casa Torres, and finally arrived in Sulphur Springs around 5pm. Cousin Steve had driven from Tonganoxie KS the day before. We arrived in Sulphur Springs just in time to head for dinner at Muddy Jake's, Carolyn and son Scott's Sports Grill and Pub. We had a great meal, and lots of fun playing Thursday night's Trivia game.
- Friday June 27, we celebrated Steve's 66th birthday. Carolyn's son Scott and wife Amy came over to visit later that evening.
- Saturday June 28 Tom and Carolyn took us to see Jersey Boys, a movie about Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. We all came out singing!! Then we rested, in preparation for the annual symphony concert and fireworks display in the Sulphur Springs town square. Dinner at Lou Viney's was followed by fun and celebration, in honor of our nation's Independence.
- Sunday June 29 we took Tom and Carolyn to San Remo's for dinner. All in all, we had a great time in Sulphur Springs. Thanks, Carolyn & Tom!
- Monday June 30, we drove to Ennis TX to visit Dianne's sister Juli, her 3 daughters, and their children.
- Tuesday July 1 we picked up Dallas, Heavyn, and JoJo (Ellissa) and brought them to our hotel to swim. Their mother Katie came over during her lunch to see us.
- Wednesday July 2 we visited at Juli's, and went for a walk with the kids, and later stopped in to see Amy.
- Thursday July 3rd, we drove to Houston TX to visit Dianne's brother David and his partner Steven. On the way we stopped in Spring TX to visit Dianne's sister Joyce and husband Bill. Their girls Emily and Rebecca were there, as were 5 of their 8 grandchildren. In Houston David and Steven took us to Pei Wei for dinner, and later we went grocery shopping at Kroger's.
- Friday July 4th was spent shopping at the Apple Store (to repair Daivid's iPhone, listening to the rain, watching TV. Steven cooked a fabulous lasagna meal, and later he and Martha went for a walk in the misty evening.
- Saturday July 5th Joyce invited us to come for a swim. Later Emily and Jim came over, and Bill returned from rescuing the cows at the farm in La Grange.
