About MARIAN!

Bio by Marian Louise Getter, written for the Getter reunion, August 15-18, 2002

Marian Louise Getter, born in Arkansas City, KS, on August 23, 1916, was the middle of six children. Doyle was born in 1909, Katherine in 1911, (Martha was born Dec. 1913, and died in July 1914), Milton in 1919, and Carolyn in 1924. My father owned a laundry, and during the depression years he could barely hang on. After Junior College, I went to the University of Kansas at Lawrence, receiving a BA degree with a major in bacteriology. I spent a year as a medical technologist intern at the University of Kansas Hospital before working in Phoenix, AZ.

Phil Raup and I were married February 1, 1941, in Madison, WI, where Phil was doing graduate work. We lived in Washington, D.C. for 4 years, Berlin, Germany four years, and Madison, WI 4 years, until moving to St. Paul, MN in 1953.

Phil, Jr. was born in 1944 when we were living in Washington, D.C. Martha was born in Arkansas City, KS in 1946, after Phil had left for Berlin. Phil, Jr., Martha, and I joined Phil in Berlin in Sept. 1946. Gordon was born in 1951 after we had returned to Madison.

I worked as a bacteriologist/medical technician until Phil, Jr. was born. We have traveled a great deal, because of Phil’s work as a Professor of Agricultural Economics at the University of Minnesota. We lived in Rome in 1960-61, and in Paris in 1966-67. I have studied French since we lived in Paris and have been active in the French organization, the Alliance Française.

I have been involved in the University of Minnesota Women’s Club, and am currently its historian. I have worked on genealogy for the last ten or fifteen years. I got my first computer when I was 75, and my birthday present this year is my third computer, a Hewlett Packard XP. I enter our financial records in Quicken.

Philip, Jr. married Judy Howie in 1964. They had two children, Christopher, born in 1965, and Kaarin, born in 1967. Although they lived in Boston with Judy after the divorce, Phil and I tried to keep in close contact with the grandchildren, taking them with us on several long trips in the summer. Philip married Marjorie Stamberg in 1981.

Gordon married Sandra Hustad Ward in 1983. Sandra’s son, Joseph, was 4 years old at the time. In 1984 David was born. It was wonderful to have grandchildren living in the same town, so that we could see them often. This joy was cut short in July, 1994, when David was killed in a car accident, caused by a drunk driver who hit the car head-on.

Martha has been in San Francisco since 1969 and living with her partner, Dianne Joseph, since 1973.

I developed an interest in cooking from my mother, and have been collecting recipes over a lifetime. I have just recently typed up a collection of my favorite recipes, which I hope you will enjoy.
