- Elena Glinksy, Ivan III's surviving wife and the regent of 8-year-old Ivan IV, is poisoned; the boyar duma takes over as regent for Ivan IV, until he is 16 years old. Lecture #2d:1.
- Sudebnik - Week 2
- zemski sobor was called in 1549, and in 1550 legal code implemented by Ivan IV; remained in effect until replaced by Alexei Mikhailovich in 1649 (the Ulozhenie). Lecture #2d:2. Text: 70, 81, 99, 134, 177.
- Oprichnina - Week 2
- in 1560 Ivan IV's wife Anastasi died (poisoned?); in 1564, Ivan IV left Moscow; demanded the creation of oprichnina before he would return; division of the Russian state in which the Tsar (Ivan IV) was given the right to punish people as he saw fit; area grew eventually to 1/3 of Muscovite state; Zemshchina is name for traditional state: maintained its traditional order, and had nominal ruler - Tartar prince named Simeon; became a sinister state, with servitors dressed in black, riding black horses, who were a form of "political police"; creation of new state led to reign of terror: all who opposed Ivan = killed; entire towns destroyed, including his own family, and all who fled to Lithuania; stability of state was constantly. - Boris Godunov - Week 3
- Ivan IV is poisoned in 1584; Boris Godunov Musorgsky takes over regency for Fyodor; 1591 death of Ivan IV left Fyodor as heir - weak physically & mentally; brother-in-law=BG (married to Irene, sister of Fyodor); may have caused Dmitri's death (last son of Ivan IV; not legitimate; movedto palace outside Moscow; years in power not popular - famine & drought; named son Fyodor as heir - angered boyar duma (noble council), and in 1601 he purged the boyars around him (147); 1589 the Patriarch of Russia is established (142); died 1604: heart attack (Polish army invaded with False Dmitri). - Aleksei married Natalia (mother of Peter the Great); Feodosia Morozova is arrested.
- Mestnichestro - Week 3
- Theodore ruled from 1676-1682 (ages 14-20); abolished mestnichestvo, a "cumbersome and defective system of service appointments" which made it easier for Peter the Great to reform and govern the state. Lecture #nl:p. Text: 168.
